JT Recommends
About this book, by the wondrous Nic Kelman:The book is a landmark in that it is the first time a major international art publisher has published a work about the art and design of video games, but also because it is the first book to collect together in one place so much material from so many different titles, genres, publishers, and developers. In addition, it contains a large number of never-before-seen pieces, commentary from some of the designers themselves, and a preface by Dr. Henry Jenkins, Director of the Comparative Media Studies Department at MIT.
Although it's a must have for gamers, it is also unique in that it approaches for the first time outside of academia the possibility that games might now be considered an entirely new art form. Artists, designers, and architects, as well as art history and pop culture enthusiasts, will find it an invaluable reference tool with hundreds of paintings, concept sketches, story-boards, renders, keyart, and other beautiful details from the game development process.
Great writing from JT's friend, Litsa Dremousis:
"An Open Letter to Keith Richards' Immune System"
"Who Would I Kill: A Partial List"
"Ivory Christmas" (The last two lines of "Ivory Christmas" got cut for space reasons, but they're my favorite part: "He said it was because she would blow him. Though perhaps Pete liked his Christmases white, not Ivory.")
"Seizure Sex"
